The race is on for a new director at the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer. According to an internal memo seen by POLITICO Europe, 33 candidates submitted their candidacies to replace Christopher Wild as the body's director. A vote to elect the new director will take place on May 17.

Why it matters: IARC, as you might recall, was the entity that deemed the weedkiller glyphosate to "probably" cause cancer in humans. Its assessment system isn't based on expected levels of exposure, making it a major political target, as our colleagues at POLITICO Europe wrote in a profile of Wild last year.

Glyphosate specialist steps down: The list of candidates includes Christopher Portier, who was an invited specialist on an IARC working group on glyphosate that concluded in 2015 that the weedkiller "probably" causes cancer in humans. However, Portier said he was "no longer considered a candidate for that position." Other candidates on the list include David Richardson, who has conducted epidemiological research focusing on radiation exposure of workers at U.S. nuclear weapons production facilities.
