President Donald Trump will implement tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union, the White House announced Thursday.

Mexico responded with its own tariffs on a list of U.S. products including pork bellies, blueberries, apples, grapes, and some types of cheese and steel, The Washington Post reported. The EU said it would impose duties on a number of U.S. imports and would proceed with a dispute resolution case through the World Trade Organization, according to various media reports.

Trump said he is taking the action to protect America’s national security from the effects of global oversupply of steel and aluminum, following extensive discussions with countries to reach separate arrangements to avoid the 25 percent tariff on steel imports and 10 percent tariff on aluminum first announced in March. The tariffs will take effect at midnight Thursday.

The United States has since reached arrangements with South Korea, Australia, Argentina and Brazil on steel, and with Australia and Argentina on aluminum. The United States was unable to reach satisfactory arrangements, however, with Canada, Mexico or the EU, Trump said.
