House Agriculture Chairman Mike Conaway has a list of 36 Republicans to persuade to vote in favor of the farm bill before it comes up for a second vote. Tentatively, that is expected to take place during the second half of next week as soon as votes on two immigration bills are held, Pro Agriculture's Catherine Boudreau reports.

The Texas Republican wants to win over the 29 members who opposed the farm bill during the vote in May -- plus another seven who were absent the day of the first attempt. "It's going to be close," Conaway told reporters Thursday, with a list of members' names in hand.

Republicans who were absent: Reps. Kevin Yoder (Kan.); David Valadao (Calif.); Hal Rogers (Ky.); Raúl Labrador (Idaho); Louie Gohmert (Texas); Carlos Curbelo (Fla.); and Ken Buck (Colo.) were not present on May 18, so it's unclear where they stand.

Democrats still are expected to vote against the farm bill. Not a single Democrat voted for the bill when it failed 198 to 213. Many members of the House Freedom Caucus withheld support for the farm bill so that GOP leadership would first schedule floor time for an unrelated immigration proposal put forth by Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte.

The House is expected to vote on that bill next week, as well as a more moderate compromise package that is still being negotiated.

MA readers may recall that Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) said Wednesday that he will support the farm bill now that GOP leadership is dealing with immigration legislation.
