North Carolina June Hog Report

All hogs and pigs on North Carolina farms on June 1, 2018 totaled 8.9 million head, unchanged from last quarter and last year. Market hogs, at 7.99 million head, were down slightly from both last year and last quarter. Breeding stock totaled 910,000 head, up 3% from last year up 10,000 head last quarter. The State’s pig crop during the March–May 2018 period totaled 4.697 million head, down slightly from the same period last year. These pigs were produced by 465,000 sows. Pigs saved per litter averaged 10.1, which is up from the 10.0 pigs saved during the same quarter last year. North Carolina producers intend to farrow 470,000 sows during both the June–August 2018 and the September– November 2018 quarters. North Carolina currently ranks 2 nd nationally, behind Iowa, in the total number of hogs and pigs produced.
