N.C. farmers to plant more corn and cotton, less peanuts, soybeans and tobacco

“We would like to thank all the farmers that took time out of their busy schedules to respond the June Agricultural Surveys,”
said Dee Webb, North Carolina State Statistician. “We work diligently to provide accurate, timely and useful agricultural data
and that would not be possible without the farmers’ willingness to participate. These data are important to farmers as they
plan and prepare each year as well as the data helps NC agriculture remain viable and capable.”


• Corn plantings are expected to total 930,000 acres in 2018, up 4% from 2017.
• Cotton growers intend to plant 440,000 acres in 2018, up 17% from last year.
• Flue-cured tobacco growers expect to harvest 158,000 acres in 2018, down 5,000 acres from 2017.
• Burley tobacco growers expect to harvest 800 acres in 2018, down 11% from last year.
• Soybean plantings, at 1.6 million acres, are expected to decrease 6% from 2017.
• Peanut growers intend to plant 105,000 acres in 2018, down 12% from the planted acreage in 2017.
• Sweet potato growers intend to plant 88,000 acres, 2,000 less acres than last year.
• Hay producers expect to cut 705,000 acres in 2018, up 8% from 2017.
• Winter wheat plantings totaled 480,000 acres, up 7% from last year.
