Walking through a grocery store in the middle of South Dakota, a lady approached Adam Hopson. “You’re Baby James’ daddy, aren’t you,” she asked Hopson. Surprised, Adam told her he was, and the two got to talking. Baby James is not a human baby. He’s a Scottish Highland Cow who was raised on Hopson’s farm, Happy Hens and Highlands, in Yancey County. Adam and his wife, Emily, have grown a successful business as hobby farmers, breeding and selling Highland cows across the country -- all with the help of an unlikely tool: social media.
