A recent regulatory change by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency allows for the removal of Stokes, Surry and Wilkes counties from requiring emissions inspections of cars and light trucks. The state Division of Air Quality requested the removal of 26 of the 48 counties where emissions inspections are required. The EPA's rule change was approved by the agency July 16.
