Sen. Burr: Calling on Congress to save America’s most successful conservation program

Since the beginning of this Congress, I’ve been pushing for the Senate to permanently reauthorize the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), a rare government program that makes commonsense and has a proven track record of success. This week, I joined a bipartisan group of Senators on an amendment to reauthorize the program as part of the appropriations process. Yet even though the American people want to see the LWCF continued, the Senate has still refused to consider a vote to save the program before it expires in September.

Yesterday, I spoke on the Senate floor, and made it clear that I am not giving up. I believe in this program and the difference it makes in communities across the country. Over the last five decades, the LWCF has contributed to more than 42,000 recreation projects across every state. It’s popular, bipartisan, and effective. Most importantly, it is funded without a single taxpayer dollar. It deserves an open debate and a fair vote, and I’m confident that it would pass given the opportunity.

That’s why I am going to continue pushing for LWCF reauthorization each time the Senate considers legislation. Some may object, but if they do they are objecting to doing what the American people sent us here to do. We should open this issue for debate, and we should work to preserve our nation’s beautiful parks, lands and waters for future generations to enjoy.
