Tariff legislation introduced in Congress

Three separate bills have now been introduced in the Senate with another in the House to curb the president’s authority over Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962. Following a Section 232 investigation into steel and aluminum imports, the U.S. increased its tariffs on these products, leading China, Canada, Mexico, the European Union, Turkey, and India to implement retaliatory tariffs against a wide range of U.S. agricultural goods and products. Among those introducing legislation is Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN), who attempted to include his bill as an amendment to the Senate’s version of the Farm Bill. More than 270 business groups have come out in support of the House legislation, including the National Beer Wholesalers Association, National Confectioners Association, Pet Food Institute, and WineAmerica.
