North Carolina August Crop Production Report: Corn & soybean production down

 “We recognize this is a hectic time of the year for farmers and we want to express our sincere appreciation for their time and effort in participating in the monthly Agricultural Yield Survey,” said Dee Webb, North Carolina State Statistician. “By responding, the growers provided essential information for crop yields that helped determine monthly production forecasts. Their responses also helps the farming community, related agriculture industries and ensures USDA bases it decisions on the most accurate data.” 

Corn for grain

• Yield is forecast at 120 bushels per acre, down 22 bushels from last year’s record yield of 142 bushels per acre.

• Production is forecast to total 104.4 million bushels, down 12% from the 119.3 million bushels produced last year.

• Harvested acres are forecast at 870,000, up from 840,000 acres harvested in 2017. 

Cotton

• Yield is forecast at 849 pounds per acre, down 120 pounds from last year’s yield of 969 pounds per acre.

• Production is forecast at 761,000 bales, up 8% from last year’s production of 741,000 bales.

• Harvested acres are expected to total 430,000 acres compared with 367,000 acres harvested in 2017.

Peanuts

• Yield per acre is forecast at 4,100 pounds, unchanged from last year’s estimate.

• Production is forecast at 422.3 million pounds, down 12% from last year’s production of 479.7 million.

• Harvested acres are projected at 103,000 acres, down 14,000 acres from 2017. 

Soybeans

• Yield is forecast to average 38 bushels per acre, down 2 bushels from last year’s record yield of 40 bushels.

• Production is forecast to total 60.4 million bushels, down 11% from last year’s production of 67.6 million bushels.

• Harvested acres are projected at 1.59 million acres, down 100,000 acres from last year.


Flue-Cured Tobacco

• Yield per acre is forecast at 2,100 pounds, down 100 pounds per acre from last year.

• Production is forecast at 331.8 million pounds, down 7% from last year.

• Harvested acres are projected at 158,000 acres, down 5,000 acres from 2017. 


Winter Wheat

• Yield is forecast to average 55 bushels, unchanged from last year.

• Production is forecast to total 21.5 million bushels, up 4% from last year’s production of 20.6 million bushels.

• Harvested acres are projected at 390,000 acres, up 15,000 acres from last year.
