FEMA denies help for WNC after mudslides, floods; State to appeal

 No help is coming from FEMA for Western North Carolina residents impacted by mudslides and floods that killed five people and destroyed homes and businesses in May. FEMA will not grant a major disaster declaration for the region after determining that “the damages resulted from separate and distinct events, none of which were of the severity and magnitude as to be beyond the capabilities of the State and affected local governments,” Gov. Roy Cooper said in a news release Tuesday.
