Florence rains wash some coal ash from landfill at Duke Energy’s Sutton plant

Rains from Tropical Storm Florence undermined part of the berm protecting the lined landfill at Duke Energy’s Sutton Power Plant, apparently releasing an undetermined amount of coal ash into Sutton Lake. Meanwhile, Duke Energy Corp. (NYSE:DUK) reports that 1.26 million of its 4.2 million Carolinas customers have experienced power outages during the storm. As of 8 a.m. Sunday, power had been restored to about 833,000 of them.
