As the effects of Hurricane Florence continue to create great needs across the state of North Carolina, the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has had many calls from those who want to help or make donations. Contacting your local agencies is a good start. We are grateful for those who have offered support for our animal response.

“Physical donations are most easily managed if the items you donate have been requested by a group or agency. In many places, access to affected locations for delivery of donated supplies is still hindered. Monetary donations provide support for staff already providing relief in impacted areas,” said Dr. Anna Allen, southeastern region EP veterinarian.

Here are suggestions for financial donations:
1. For general agriculture relief for farmers and the agricultural community, the N.C. Farm Bureau has established a relief fund. It can be found here:

2. For companion animal relief, contact your individual county’s animal service providers, such as Animal Control, and they can provide information on which county-run shelters or private animal welfare groups are coordinating disaster response operations.
3. For farm animal relief, contact the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service for the county you wish to help. A directory can be found here:
https://www.ces.ncsu.edu/local-county-center/
4. For general animal relief, donate to the N.C. State College of Veterinary Medicine Disaster Relief Fund here:

5. For contributions to hurricane damage relief, donate to the North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund by texting “Florence” to 20222 or visiting this website:

For bulk donations of products such as feed or cleaning supplies, contact Dr. Allen at 919-807-4300 or anna.allen@ncagr.gov.
