Steps protect bees, other life from mosquito spraying

A livestock extension agent who also keeps bees said bees and other beneficial insects face little threat from the ground spraying underway to combat the Florence borne mosquito invasion. That could change if officials decide aerial spraying is needed, said Andy Burlingham, agriculture and livestock agent with Pitt County Cooperative Extension Service. Burlington also is the extension adviser for the Tar River Beekeepers and tends four hives himself. “The reason we are spraying for mosquitoes is for the greater good,” Burlingham said.
