Urban farmers growing vegetables in Africa could accidentally be helping to spread disease by irrigating crops with wastewater, according to researchers. In a report published in the Environmental Research journal, the scientists found evidence in Burkina Faso canal water samples of virulent pathogens commonly responsible for waterborne diseases which could lead to people that are directly or indirectly exposed suffering from acute diarrhea, chronic gastritis and gastroenteritis.
