People in Eastern North Carolina waiting for the last moment to get that great pumpkin for Halloween or Thanksgiving decorations might be out of luck. Pumpkin stands in Lenoir County were getting kind of sparse the final week before the holiday and some of that may be attributed to the county receiving 23 inches of rain in July and Hurricane Florence around harvest time in September. Stephen Porter, owner of Porter Farmers and Nursery in Lenoir County, said it was a difficult growing season with all of the rain and the hurricane. He lost half his 47-acre crop, he said.
