The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality is releasing a draft statewide inventory of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for public review.  The inventory contains a detailed accounting of greenhouse gases from human activity in key source categories from 1990 to 2017, including both emissions and reductions.

The inventory also projects North Carolina’s GHG emissions from 2018 to 2030 based on forecasted changes in fuel use, land use, population, historical trends, and other factors.

On Monday, Governor Roy Cooper’s executive order set a goal of 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions for 2005 levels by the year 2025.  In 2017, statewide net GHG reductions were down 25.2% from 2005 levels.

The full report is available at https://deq.nc.gov/energy-climate/climate-change/greenhouse-gas-inventory.

The GHG inventory, along with documentation of the data and methods used to develop the emissions estimates, will be available for public review until December 14, 2018. Please submit any comments by emailing daq.publiccomments@ncdenr.gov with a subject heading of “Inventory.” The revised final inventory will be posted by January 31, 2019.
