Beyond the farm bill, Democrats will be in position to exert tougher oversight on USDA and push for action on immigration reform.

— Secretary Sonny Perdue's plans to relocate two USDA research agencies outside of Washington next year could face more scrutiny. Democrats will also keep closer tabs on the trade pain across U.S. farm regions, as well as USDA's mitigation efforts.

— Moderating factor: Peterson is arguably the chamber's most conservative Democrat, so the committee's leftward shift probably won't be as dramatic as on other House panels.
