China’s agricultural ministry confirmed it found the first case of African swine fever (ASF) in a wild boar and the first outbreak in the southwest province of Sichuan, the country’s leading pig herd region, Reuters reported.

In the case of the wild boar, the disease was found in a dead animal in Baishan city, Jilin province, in northeastern China, Reuters said. China has a large population of wild boar.

China has banned transportation of live pigs and products from regions infected by ASF and neighboring provinces, but the virus continues to spread. There have been more than 60 outbreaks in 18 provinces since early August, according to the article.

The latest developments suggest the ongoing crisis for the world’s top pork producer could have a major impact on pork supplies in the months ahead, Reuters  said.
