The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture applauds today’s signing of the US-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement, as it modernizes trading relationships with our North American neighbors and increases market opportunities for U.S. agricultural goods.

NASDA CEO Barb Glenn welcomed the progress made in this modernized agreement. “We celebrate the progress USMCA represents for agricultural producers around the continent, as  Mexico and Canada are two of our most important trading partners,” Glenn said. The agreement will provide certainty and enhanced market access, all while modernizing significant aspects of our relationships. We urge Congress to swiftly ratify USMCA.”

NASDA is especially pleased by the progress made on market access to Canada for U.S. dairy, wheat and wine. “We look forward to collaborating with our federal partners to ensure all provisions of the USMCA are implemented in a timely and proper manner,” Glenn said.

Glenn stated that the USMCA will also increase and streamline trade, especially in respect to biotech and gene-edited products and commodities impacted by the sanitary and phyto-sanitary chapter.
“A new section on biotechnology and gene-edited products is promising for the future of agriculture, as it paves a way for innovative and sustainable agriculture to thrive across the continent.”

NASDA is a nonpartisan, nonprofit association which represents the elected and appointed commissioners, secretaries, and directors of the departments of agriculture in all fifty states and four U.S. territories. NASDA grows and enhances agriculture by forging partnerships and creating consensus to achieve sound policy outcomes between state departments of agriculture, the federal government, and stakeholders.
