The Waters of the U.S. rule has long been a point of contention between industry and regulators. A federal proposal to significantly curb the kinds of bodies of water receiving protection is receiving criticism from environmental groups who are concerned that, if finalized, the rule could worsen existing flooding and water quality problems around Wilmington. Kemp Burdette, the Cape Fear riverkeeper, said, “This is a year when we should all be really clear about how important it is to protect waterways, and here, in the midst of the GenX revelations and in the midst of damage associated with Hurricane Florence and in the midst of better understanding the impacts (concentrated animal feeding operations) have on waterways, we’re talking not about strengthening rules, but weakening them.” For more of this story, click here.
