All hogs and pigs on North Carolina farms on December 1, 2018 totaled 9.1 million head, down 2% from September 1 up 1% from last year. Market hogs, at 8.2 million head, were up 1% from last year but down 2% from last quarter. Breeding stock at 900,000 head was unchanged from December 1 of last year. The State’s pig crop during the September – November 2018 period totaled 4.7 million head, up 1% from the same period last year. These pigs were produced by 465,000 sows, up 1% from 2017. Pigs saved per litter averaged at 10.15, which is down from the 10.20 pigs saved during the same quarter last year. North Carolina producers intend to farrow 455,000 sows during the December 2018 – February 2019 quarter and 465,000 sows during the March – May 2019 quarter. North Carolina ranks 2nd nationally, behind Iowa, in the total number of hogs and pigs produced.
