A meal of collard greens and black-eyed peas is a New Year's Day staple in many U.S. homes on Jan. 1, especially in the South. That's due largely to the legend that the meal can bring prosperity in the new year. But an abundance of rainfall in North Carolina has led to a shortage of the treasured greens.
