The WNC Farmers Market will host several special events over the next few months for shoppers looking to shake off the winter chill.

“The WNC Farmers Market is open seven days a week, year-round to better serve the farmers of Western North Carolina,” said Doug Sutton, market manager. “While shoppers can come out any day to enjoy the market, we hope they will make plans to join us for several upcoming events this winter.”

On Friday, Jan. 25, from noon to 1p.m. consumers can stop by the market to pick up healthy snack ideas for their Super Bowl parties. Visitors will have the chance to sample treats made from ingredients found on the market and get ideas for healthier options to help keep their New Year’s resolutions.

On Friday, Feb. 1, the market will demonstrate how to make easy and healthy soups in honor of National Homemade Soup Day. Visitors can enjoy free samples from noon to 1 p.m. and pick up recipes to try at home.

On Saturday, Feb. 9, the market will host a Valentine’s Day celebration to get shoppers in the mood for the day of love. Visitors are encouraged to wear red with prizes given for best-dressed in a Valentine’s Day theme. In addition, guests can make their own Valentine’s Day cards and sample themed food featuring market ingredients. The celebration will take place in the retail buildings from noon to 1 p.m.

On Friday, March 15, the market will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with free samples of Irish Stew and Irish Soda Bread made with ingredients from the market. The festivities run from noon to 1 p.m. Guests are encouraged to wear green.

Visitors will notice several improvements to the market, including remodeled bathrooms, new lightning and a fresh coat of paint. The market also is in the process of installing new garage doors in its retail areas. The most recent renovations are expected to be complete by the end of January. The market is open during construction; however, some vendors are temporarily closed.

Visitors are encouraged to call the market at 828-253-1691 to confirm which vendors are open.

The WNC Farmers Market is one of four, state-operated farmers markets located across North Carolina. The market offers seasonal produce, fresh meats and cheeses, honey, mountain crafts and a variety of specialty products. The market also is home to Jesse Israel & Sons Garden and Nursery Center and The Moose Café. Updates about these and other events are available on the market’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/WNCFarmersMarket.
