Wettest year causes hardships for farmers, road crews

More than six-and-a-half feet of rain fell on the region in 2018, setting a new record for annual rainfall and causing a wide array of soggy problems for everything from harvesting crops to fixing potholes. The National Weather Service measured 79.21 inches at Asheville Regional Airport, surpassing the previous record year — 2013’s 75.22 inches — and marking a new official wettest year on record. But the airport tends to be drier than most places in Henderson County and weather stations maintained by farmers, as well as unofficial accounts from Henderson County residents, have recorded even more than the NWS measurement.
