The N.C. Forest Service has officially taken ownership of a 778.5-acre land donation that will be added to DuPont State Recreational Forest likely next year. The 10,400-acre forest will add 778.5 acres near Cascade Lake on the Transylvania County side for public use once the land is evaluated by the N.C. Forest Service. The late Charles Pickelsimer Jr., who died in 2011, gifted the land in his will through The Conservation Fund, an environmental nonprofit. Another 59 acres of the estate was donated to Brevard College.
