EU-Japanese trade deal to enter force, still no bilateral with U.S.

China isn’t the only trade deal in the works. Japan discussions are underway but that country isn’t waiting on the United States. It has another free trade deal, without the U.S., that goes into effect this week. That deal is between Japan and the European Union. Here at home, both the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S. Trade Representatives (USTR) say a bilateral deal with Japan is high on the priority list. How important is a free trade deal with Japan? Does the country need the United States?
