Augusta, Ga.-based beef processor FPL Food said it will close its West Columbia, S.C., plant at the end of January, only eight months after opening the facility.

FPL had big plans for the former Carolina Culinary Foods plant, saying in April it would invest some $4.3 million and create upwards of 100 jobs to accommodate a growing business.

The plant began operations in May, but the economic downturn forced FPL to halt operations, according to marketing director Steve Hixson, as quoted by The State.com in South Carolina.

He added that work will be shifted back to Augusta.

The West Columbia facility sold ground beef to restaurants and retailers, which have reined in their spending during the recession, Chuck Whipple, a local economic development leader, was quoted as saying.
