The Nutrition Coalition is encouraging others to follow its lead by writing to Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue encouraging him to nominate members with a broader array of viewpoints on what constitutes a healthy diet to the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee.
Perdue is expected to name committee members this month for the 2020-2025 guidelines.
According to the Nutrition Coalition, the last committee convened in 2015 largely favored vegetarianism, with 11 out of 14 members having consistently published work in favor of plant-based, low-animal-fat, vegetarian diets.
According to Politico, USDA and the Department of Health and Human Services, “have already quietly signaled they’re headed toward at least taking a closer look at a low-carb approach,” noting that last fall the departments for the first time included both low-carbohydrate and high-fat diets in the list of dietary patterns to be reviewed.
Low-carbohydrate and high-fat diets, including the ketogenic diet, the paleo diet and the re-launched Atkins Today diet have become increasingly popular in recent years with research confirming positive health outcomes.
