Forest stewardship requires many tools, and hand-applied herbicides are on such option. These selectively control vegetation and can help you accomplish several stewardship objectives, like controlling invasive species and favoring commercial timber species.

Using hand-applied herbicides is safe, simple and inexpensive.

This guide provides an introduction to hand-applied herbicides, and a few of the advantages and disadvantages of this method. The four methods of hand application are basal stem (bark) treatment, cut surface, soil spot treatment, and directed foliar, and you can reference the guide for more detailed information about each. Application equipment and a number of herbicides labeled for individual stem treatment are listed in the guide, and you should consult with your county Extension agent, state forest service forester, forestry consultant, or weed control specialist for assistance with selecting the appropriate herbicide and application technique suitable for your needs.
