This week, the Senate took long overdue steps toward permanently renewing the Land and Water Conservation Fund. As you know, this program has been a priority of mine for years. Renewing this program permanently gives federal, state, and local bodies the certainty they need to carry out their conservation mission. And LWCF is, without a doubt, the most important tool in their toolbox.

It restores and maintains historic battlefields across the country. It helps protect thousands of acres of treasured places and their water sources like the Blue Ridge Parkway’s Waterrock Knob and the Great Smoky Mountains. And it maintains state parks and forests, including the recently opened Headwaters State Forest near Brevard.

North Carolina is truly one-of-a-kind. From the Outer Banks to the western mountains, we have a million excuses to put our phones down and get outside. LWCF makes sure that our children, our grandchildren, and their grandchildren will have the same incredible opportunities to enjoy America’s natural wonders that we have now. That’s why LWCF is so important. And that’s why permanently renewing this program will rank right at the top of my proudest accomplishments in Congress.
