Sara Lee Corp. on Thursday announced plans to cut approximately 700 positions as it outsources parts of its North American and European Finance (transaction processing) and Global Information Services (applications development and maintenance) functions as well as its global indirect procurement activities.

The Downers Grove, Ill.-based processor, whose meat brands include Jimmy Dean and Hillshire Farm, said the effort is part of its initiative to trim costs by up to $250 million over the next three years.

"In addition to the cost savings, business process outsourcing will help Sara Lee further drive standardization, increase efficiency and provide flexibility," CEO Brenda Barnes said in a news release.

Sara Lee expects to begin implementing the initiative in North America in the current fiscal year and complete global implementation within three years. The company is currently finalizing contract specifics with a third-party supplier.
