NASDA statement on the president’s budget proposal

Following President Trump’s release of the administration’s budget request yesterday, Dr. Barbara P. Glenn, Chief Executive Officer of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) issued the following statement:
“We are disappointed that many of the proposed cuts in the president’s budget request would negatively impact agriculture, particularly at a time when many in agriculture are facing a serious economic downturn. We expect Congress and the administration to ensure the programs on which agriculture depends across the federal government—from USDA, FDA, and even EPA—are adequately funded.”
One positive thread throughout the Budget was the theme of cooperative federalism, particularly in the realm of food safety. The Budget called for a $16 million increase in funding to advance implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) with a specific focus on cooperative agreements.
“Because NASDA Members have a substantial role in implementing FSMA, funding is a priority. We appreciate the Administration’s prioritization of a safe food supply for Americans. We look forward to working with Appropriators to ensure the needs of the agriculture community are met.”
