The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) announced it will launch a scorecard to track food companies’ progress on animal welfare policies.

Many companies have adopted timelines for changing certain practices such as 2022 for eliminating gestation crates, 2024 for implementing new chicken-raising practices and 2025 for eliminating hen cages, HSUS noted in a press release. The Food Industry Scorecard will measure progress toward reaching those goals, the group said.

The scorecard will also identify steps companies are taking to comply with animal welfare legislation such as ballot measures in California and Massachusetts on confinement of farm animals, HSUS said. The group said it also plans to evaluate what companies are doing to adopt and promote plant-based foods.

HSUS said it has sent the first scorecard to the largest food companies and plans to make the results public.
