Poultry processor Wayne Farms has completed the purchase of approximately 125 acres adjacent to its Elkin, N.C. hatchery and feed mill for $548,500. The operation supplies poultry feed to area producers who supply Wayne Farms.

Wayne Farms spokesman Frank Singleton told Meatingplace that the acquisition of the additional acreage is "just a natural" step in the company's expansion plan and stems from greater demand by its farmer partners for feed supply.

"We want to increase our capacity and the quality of our wastewater release so we're working with an engineer now to design and upgrade that system sometime over the next 18 months," Singleton said. "We've expanded our operation [in Elkin] over the last few years and contracted with more farm partners, so our feed mill needs to be expanded over time."

Previously, the parcel of land was slated to be the site of a Fibrowatt USA bio-fueled power-generating station that would incinerate chicken waste and wood shavings to produce electricity, according to the Mt. Airy News. The project was halted by county commissioners when Fibrowatt could not pass environmental performance standards at its Minnesota site.
