Yesterday Rep. Jon Hardister (R-Guilford, Majority Whip) filed HB 472 - NC A&T State University / Ag. Funds - which would provide a full state match for federal funds to support agricultural research and Cooperative Extension programs at NC A&T State University. Reps. Josh Dobson (R-McDowell), John Faircloth (R-Guilford) and Ashton Clemmons (D-Guilford) on this legislation.

This legislation would provide an additional $2 million per year for agricultural research and Cooperative Extension programs at NC A&T. It would enable A&T’s College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences to strengthen research in priority areas that include sustainable agriculture, food safety, nutrition and wellness. The Cooperative Extension would expand its local and urban agriculture initiative and its programs for at-risk families.

“This bill would allow us to do even more to boost the local and state economies through our research and outreach,” said Mohamed Ahmedna, Dean of A&T’s College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. “We appreciate the leadership shown by the legislators who crafted this bill. HB 472 represents a wise investment in A&T as well as in public health and well-being.This legislation would help ensure that we continue to receive critical federal funding. Not receiving a full state match jeopardizes that funding and the high level of service we provide to the people of North Carolina.”

“This legislation will provide critical support for advancements in agriculture,” Hardister said. “The impressive academic research and development at A&T continues to have a positive impact on agriculture in North Carolina. We are seeking to promote education, jobs and economic activity related to the agricultural industry."
