NC March 2019 hog report

All hogs and pigs on North Carolina farms on March 1, 2019 totaled 8.9 million head, down 2% from December 1, 2018. Market hogs, at 8.0 million head, were unchanged from last year and down 2% from last quarter. Breeding stock totaled 900,000 head, unchanged from last year and last quarter. The State’s pig crop during the December 2018 – February 2019 period totaled 4.5 million head, up 1% from the same period last year. These pigs were produced by 450,000 sows. Pigs saved per litter averaged 9.9, which is the same as the 9.9 pigs saved during the same quarter last year. North Carolina producers intend to farrow 465,000 sows during both the March–May and June–August 2019 quarters. North Carolina ranks 2nd nationally, behind Iowa, in the total number of hogs and pigs produced.
