NASDA, broad coalition call on Congress for full funding of urban agriculture programs...

The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) and a broad coalition of leading food and agricultural groups are urging Congress to support a vibrant and sustainable agriculture system by fully funding the Office of Urban Agriculture and Innovative Production and the urban agriculture data initiative in fiscal year 2020.
“Urban agriculture is an integral part of our food system,” Dr. Barb Glenn, NASDA CEO, said. “When we support urban agriculture, we help communities flourish through social, environmental and economic benefits.”
NASDA Members recently voted to work toward ensuring Congress prioritizes urban agriculture through the development of the Office of Urban Agriculture and Innovative Production at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). As the primary leaders of the agriculture and food industry in their states, NASDA Members view the development of this office as an opportunity to bolster and accelerate the efforts of their states’ urban agriculture communities.
“For many, urban agriculture is a pathway to start farming, gain experience and expand operations into rural communities,” Glenn said. “Supporting urban agriculture fortifies agriculture’s future.”
