Hanesbrands plans to close Mount Airy sock plant; 220 employees affected

Hanesbrands Inc. is closing its sock manufacturing plant in Mount Airy by October, eliminating 220 jobs at the facility it had operated for 40 years. The company said Thursday it is transferring production to its El Salvador sock plant as part of a cost-cutting initiative, along with buying some of the socks made in El Salvador from “large-scale specialty producers in Asia.”
