The FDA is planning a new food safety agenda, aiming to make foods more traceable back to their source following deadly outbreaks of foodborne illnesses in recent years, Pro Ag's Helena Bottemiller Evich reports.

FDA leaders said on Tuesday that they plan to soon roll out their "Blueprint for a New Era of Smarter Food Safety," a plan covering initiatives from traceability to digital technologies and "evolving food business models." The agency's strategy will also include a pilot program to use artificial intelligence and machine learning to screen food imports.

What's next: The plan will be subject to public input in the months ahead.
