John Gross, who owns Gross Farms in Sanford with his wife, Tina, began farming with his dad in 1983 while still in high school. He first planted 3 acres of tobacco, he said, and bought his first farm in 1985, a year after he graduated. “It was a 43-acre farm near us, that belonged to my granddad,” he said.
