The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Secretary Michael Regan and more than a dozen coastal leaders met last week to discuss the dangers of seismic testing and offshore drilling. Since then 10 more mayors have signed a resolution stating their opposition. The mayors in attendance shared personal stories about how pursuing non-renewable energy off our coast threatens natural resources and public health. The Manteo meeting also featured locally elected and appointed officials, policy staff and several other interested parties. “This meeting is yet another example of why combating drilling and exploration off our coast is so important to our economy, environment and coastal heritage,” said Secretary Michael Regan. “Our hope is that the Trump administration will listen to what leaders on the ground in coastal communities from Bald Head Island to Elizabeth City are saying about the threats that seismic testing and offshore drilling pose to North Carolina’s economy.” The full text of the resolution is available online here: resolution Bob Woodard, Chairman - Dare County Board of Commissioners Mayor Ben Cahoon - Town of Nags Head Mayor Deborah Ahlers - Town of Caswell Beach Mayor Eddie Barber - Town of Emerald Isle Mayor Sally Belangia - Town of Oriental Mayor Tom Bennett - Town of Southern Shores Mayor Craig Bloszinsky - Town of Kure Beach Mayor Howard Braxton - Town of Topsail Beach Mayor Cin Brochure - Town of Oak Island Mayor Ricky Credle - Town of Belhaven Mayor J.V.
