Booming economy forces farmers to rely more on visa program to fill labor shortage

When officials with an ornamental tree nursery in northeast Lake County decided to expand their business recently, they made plans to bring in up to 196 temporary farmworkers from Central America with H-2A visas to fill the extra workload. Finding experienced American laborers already living in the area willing to work long hours outside in the summer months for pay just above the minimum wage proved nearly impossible, officials with Liner Source plant nursery said.
