As thousands of people flocked to the coast to mark the official start of summer, I headed west to the foothills for some much-needed R&R and to sample some of the best wines produced in the state. Until recently, my tasting experience of North Carolina wines was mainly muscadine in the Cape Fear Region. I wanted to learn more about grapes typically grown in European and Californian vineyards — Vermentino, Sagrantino, Sangiovese — that are also found in the northwestern part of the state.
