June 2019 NC hog report

All hogs and pigs on North Carolina farms on June 1, 2019 totaled 9.2 million head, up 2% from last quarter and up 3% last year. Market hogs, at 8.3 million head, were up 4% from last year and 2% from last quarter. Breeding stock totaled 900,000 head, down 1% from last year and unchanged from last quarter. The State’s pig crop during the March–May 2019 period totaled 4.83 million head, up 5% from the same period last year. These pigs were produced by 460,000 sows. Pigs saved per litter averaged 10.5, which is up from the 10.1 pigs saved during the same quarter last year. North Carolina producers intend to farrow 470,000 sows during both the June–August and the September–November 2019 quarters. North Carolina currently ranks 2 nd nationally, behind Iowa, in the total number of hogs and pigs produced.  end
