The U.S. inventory of all hogs and pigs was 75.5 million head on June 1, a 4% increase from the same time a year ago and a 1% rise from March 1, USDA said Thursday in its Quarterly Hogs and Pigs report.

The June 1 inventory of all hogs and pigs is the highest since estimates began in 1964.

Breeding inventory rose 1% from both a year ago and the previous quarter, to 6.41 million head. Market hog inventory, at 69.1 million head, was up 4% from last year and up 1% from last quarter. This is the highest June 1 market hog inventory since estimates began in 1964.

The March-May 2019 pig crop, at 34.2 million head, was up 4% from a year ago, to its highest level since estimates began in 1970.
Supplies of hogs and pork are swelling amid strong domestic and international demand, but China is a wildcard as the country adjusts to a shrinking herd from African swine fever while engaged in trade disputes with both the United States and Canada.
