N.C. farmers to plant more corn and cotton, less peanuts, soybeans and tobacco

“We would like to thank all the farmers that took time out of their busy schedules to respond the June Agricultural Surveys,” said Dee Webb, North Carolina State Statistician. “We work diligently to provide accurate, timely and useful agricultural data and that would not be possible without the farmers’ willingness to participate.

These data are important to farmers as they plan and prepare each year as well as the data helps NC agriculture remain viable and capable.”

• Corn plantings are expected to total 970,000 acres in 2019, up 7% from 2018.
• Cotton growers intend to plant 460,000 acres in 2019, up 7% from last year.
• Flue-cured tobacco growers expect to harvest 122,000 acres in 2019, down 20% from 2018.
• Burley tobacco growers expect to harvest 400 acres in 2019, down 47% from last year.
• Soybean plantings, at 1.5 million acres, are expected to decrease 9% from 2018.
• Peanut growers intend to plant 100,000 acres in 2019, down 2% from the planted acreage in 2018.
• Hay producers expect to cut 816,000 acres in 2019, unchanged from the 2018 estimate.
• Winter wheat plantings totaled 300,000 acres, down 35% from last year.
