President Trump said Saturday that he will not impose higher tariffs on an additional $350 billion worth of Chinese goods in an effort to continue negotiations for a new trade deal between the two nations.

Trump met with China President Xi Jinping at the Group of 20 Summit in Osaka, Japan, promising his counterpart that while current tariffs would remain in place, the United States would not tack on the extra hit he threatened in March while raising to 25% from 10% the rate on $200 billion worth of Chinese products.

At the time, Washington was miffed at the slow pace with which negotiations were proceeding.

“We’re going to work with China where we left off, to see if we can make a deal,” Trump told reporters, according to a White House transcript.

Trump said China will begin buying “a tremendous amount” of U.S. food and farm products even during the negotiations.

“Our farmers are going to be a tremendous beneficiary,” he said.
