Canada’s Manitoba province is experiencing an uptick in cases of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDv) that is tracking with outbreak levels in 2017, the province’s worst-ever year for the disease.

The province’s Chief Veterinary Office told the Manitoba Co-operator that cases in the province so far this year are at a level comparable to the same point in 2017. Manitoba Agriculture reported there were 43 cases of PEDv as of June 25. In 2017, a total of 80 cases were reported. Only 16 cases were reported in 2018.

Residual risks include manure, where it is thought that the virus could linger for at least two years, according to the Co-operatorreport. The province’s Chief Veterinary Office believes this year’s outbreak is spillover from 2017, the report said.

The first-ever reported case of PEDv in Alberta was reported in January. Manitoba Agriculture, in its latest update, said the PED outbreak on three swine premises in Alberta is not linked to any premises in Manitoba. Previously affected regions such as Quebec and Prince Edward Island have not reported any new cases since 2015.
