FayWHAT? What’s the history of dairy farms in Cumberland County?

In 1971, Cumberland County had a dozen dairy farm operations. Nine years later, that number had dwindled to four. Fayetteville, Cumberland County once home to dozen or more dairy farms In days gone by, the Fayetteville area was home to at least a dozen dairy farm operations. Alger B. Wilkins High School sits on a former dairy farm where the cattle once roamed. For years, Russell Emmett Davenport Sr. managed that business, the Sycamore Dairy Farm, which proved to be one of the longest-lasting dairies in Fayetteville until it closed after 63 years in business.
